Rest

The Wednesday Edition, No.3
11

It’s only been a few days since the start of my social media fast, and already I can feel the cobwebs clearing. This week I’ve been thinking a lot about space. Not outer space, particularly, but space as in the stuff between the stuff.

In my graphic design classes, my RISD professors often have me looking at what designers call “negative space.” The background is just as important as the subject — sometimes more so. Take that hidden arrow in the famous FedEx logo, for example:

In music, particularly in jazz, the rests are as important as the notes. Don’t believe me? Check out Thelonious Monk’s brilliantly sparse solo around 3:05:

Golly, I love that solo. Monk sounds like Monk because of the space around those angular sounds he pecks out. Also that hat. What a weird, brilliant artist. [Sigh]

I’ve been thinking a lot about space lately. Because I’m tired. And I’m introspective. And I’m turning 40 in a few weeks. Which also makes me tired.

I’m going to seek out a little bit of space everyday. Even for a few moments, I’m going to climb into the blue between the skyscrapers. I’m going to think about the space between me and my husband and how I can make it more supportive. I’m going to create space for my trans friends and let them know I’ll fight for them. I’m going to make space for my own mistakes.

And for you, dear reader, whether I know you or not — a moment of space for you, and a deep breath in gratitude for your attention.

Wishing you a restful week.

Your grateful space cadet,
